The Healthcare Financial Network of the Future will look, feel and process money and data much different than today. Does the development of this "platform" matter to your organization?
- Providers could gain a “smart network” that uses remittance data to reconcile books and fuel business intelligence.
- Employers could offer effective tools that help employees to improve health and lifestyle.
- Health plans could find new ways to team with banks and reduce operating costs.
- Banks could open up a whole new paradigm for investment, relationships and fee-based programs.
- Government could gain a new view of public health issues that could impact policy.
- Consumers could find useful tools that merge health-wealth information into compelling programs that help families.
- Technology firms could find new distribution channels, new business models and unlikely strategic partners.
Seven stakeholders with a vested interest in how we steer our resources as the business of healthcare "goes digital"...
How this happens requires strategic thinking; one that assesses multi-stakeholder needs, how to link technology and specialized assets in domains that are relatively new to each other (like banks and healthcare), and one that is able to look across geographic boundaries towards a world view. That's what the G7 is all about!
The G7 Roundtables
The HIMSS G7 Roundtable Series brings prominent leaders and pragmatic "doers" together to dialogue the future state of the healthcare financial network. We will examine topics that could spur investment in new directions as the business of healthcare goes digital. As this occurs it will impact all of the healthcare stakeholders.
The paradigm is changing. Paper silos are giving way to rich streams of data that can be interconnected to explore new, exciting and sustainable business models. The G7 will generate new thinking on how best to steer this evolving network to meet the critical needs of at least 7 stakeholders in healthcare: providers, consumers, employers, government, health plans, technology firms (IT and bio-technologies) and banks/financial institutions.
Building this new network will take time, yet, even today creative (disruptive) models are emerging that are fast forwarding critical parts of this complex archipelago. Some of the key building blocks are:
- Regulatory mandates (Affordable Care Act) for electronic business process transformation
- Strong engagement by banking platforms (NACHA, The Clearing House, SWIFT, Federal Reserve)
- Resolution and acceptance of HIPAA/HITECH compliance issues on medical banking models (see Gold Seal)
- An emerging consensus around the value of integrated data flows (business and clinical data)
Beyond efficiency gains, however, what do we want this platform to do?
- Evolve new mHealth models that link with emerging mPayments infrastructure?
- Create a “smart network” that uses XBRL technology, for example, to expedite workflow automation?
- Facilitate broad acceptance of electronic medical records by linking online banking with Health Information Exchanges?
- Support the patient-centered medical home and efficiently transact bundled payments across the ACO participants?
- Link with media to manage incentive programs that move consumers towards a healthier lifestyle?
Creating a Thought Leadership Platform
HIMSS and MBProject came together to create a thought leadership platform around the business of healthcare with specific focus on information technology requirements. The G7 is our foremost effort in this exciting area. Its purpose is to facilitate critical thinking around key topics that will define how the healthcare financial network of the future will evolve. These topics will be published on this website at least 30 days in advance of each G7 session to collect general comments. After each session, results will be published in the form of a new “HIMSS G7 Advisory Report " that will provide direction to the industry.
Who is the G7?
The term “G7” alludes to thought leadership by seven healthcare stakeholders – providers, health plans, banks, government, consumers, employers, and technology firms. These stakeholders have been specifically targeted for this innovative program. The G7 is comprised of a revolving panel of leaders, executives and experts in various fields that work directly or touch upon the healthcare financial network.
When will the G7 meet?
Our thought leadership platform will meet 9 times over the next 36 months. The G7 program has been fully integrated into the combined educational programs of HIMSS, thus, our meetings will convene at the following venues:
- HIMSS MBProject Leadership Forum (3 meetings, beginning in October, 2010)
- National Medical Banking Institutes@HIMSS Annual Conference (3 meetings, beginning February, 2011)
- Select academic health policy settings (3 meetings, starting date to be determined)
Are there Sponsorship Opportunities?
The G7 platform offers an unparalleled opportunity for sponsors to identify with designing the healthcare financial network of the future.
HIMSS MBProject is accepting up to 20 sponsors for our G7. This is a limited engagement for a 3 year time horizon.
Sponsor logos will appear on this website as well as on all deliverables (G7 Advisory Reports, white papers, website deliverables and more).

At our September, 2010 G7 Planning Meeting at Vanderbilt Center for Better Health, the G7 mission and guiding principles were drafted as follows:
Mission:
The G7 Thought Leadership Platform is a collaboration that will define the financial infrastructure, operating environment and operating rules to drive and support the health and healthcare models.
Guiding Principles:
-- Data Liquidity: make data available across the network
-- Assume regulations can be questioned when they are a barrier to the network
-- Provide thought leadership recommendations to inform industry policies
-- Engage a mulit-stakeholder perspective
-- Models, like Accountable Care Organizations (ACO), Episodes of care, Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH), Fee-for-service (FFS), etc., will be "use cases" to test the infrastructure model
